It’s always a challenge to find a handsome sleep sofa that will stand up to the rest of your custom upholstery.
Yesterday I found a great solution to this conundrum while CJ and I were making the rounds of a few of our favorite showrooms in the Flatiron district of Manhattan…..
Upon arriving at Mondo Collection, located at 20 West 22 Street, we were warmly greeted by Mario Elcid, designer and owner of the atelier.
He’s proud of his new creation, the Duette Sleeper Sofa, which is an amalgam of two unique sofa designs in his line. It’s successful on two major fronts: in providing additional function for apartment dwellers, and in its sleek and unassuming profile.
The Duette sofa is manufactured in Italy, and can be ordered in a variety of sizes and fabrics. He offers various textiles and leathers within the upholstery program, or is happy to accept COM. Normal lead time is 12 weeks from receipt of fabric.
The sofa that you see photographed here holds a queen size bed, and can be upholstered in all fabric, all leather or a combination as seen here. The addition of the polished aluminum base adds a polished element that separates this sleeper from any other you’ve seen.
It is supplied with a pull out bed mechanism that includes a 4” thick Queen size foam mattress, with a woven frame underneath for added comfort. Unlike traditional mechanisms, this one folds up entirely into the seating deck and not up into the hollow of the back. Therein lies the major visual improvement.
The answer to the BIG question is the price. As shown with fabric and leather, the retail price is $8,400.00 which in the scheme of things is a fair price point considered it’s all-inclusive.
I asked Mario to tell me in his words the merits of his sofa. Here is what he had to say;
“The Duette Sleeper Sofa provides functionality and flexibility without compromising the sleek silhouette of a contemporary sofa. This sofa is designed to conceal a queen size pull out bed on an interwoven elastic webbing, but also to function as a twin size daybed when the back cushions are removed. The seating/sleeping area is optimized by using a thin arm and back profile, while providing cushions in polyurethane foam with goose down covering. The back cushions are feather filled. I finished the look of the sofa by using warm felt for the inner shell and the cushions and I chose to line the exterior shell with a soft Italian midnight-blue leather.”
I suggest you stop in and see it for yourself, as well as the many other stylish pieces in the collection.
