This past Saturday I was invited to the opening reception of FRG Objects & Design Gallery – the newest atelier on Warren Street in Hudson, New York.
There were a handful of well know interior designers in attendance, including Thad Hayes, Stephen Shadley, and great friend to this blog Alan Tanksley; and it’s no wonder, because in addition to the collection of recent paintings on display by Hudson Valley artist and resident Joseph Conrad-Ferm, there were many desirable pieces of mid-century furniture….
Among the pieces I found myself coveting was a beautiful Paul McCobb oversized brass frame, three drawer coffee table (in PRISTINE condition) which he designed between 1950 and 1955 for Calvin Furniture. The contrast of the black walnut finish and the white marble top is further punctuated by solid brass pulls. In a word, chic.
I was also fond of this pair of what Carl Lana calls ‘Neo-Ming’ Chinese inspired mid-century throne chairs, which have been lacquered in a traditional cinnabar color, with slipseats upholstered in a Jim Thomson silk. A mid-century Danish dining suite – including a two leaf table, 6 chairs, sideboard, and china cabinet was also noteworthy.
Shop owner FR Gillette (a.k.a. Rick Gillette) moved to Hudson a year ago to renovate this expansive, light filled gallery space. I think you’ll find his discerning eye will make this a go-to destination for your Saturday afternoon in Hudson. Be sure to check out his line of fully customizable light fixtures as well, and a rotating collection of 50’s and 60’s lamps that’ll put you in a mod mood.
You can call the gallery for business hours at 646-483-9109, and be sure to follow them on Facebook to see more pictures of the current inventory, and to get status updates of new pieces as they come in.
