Gideon Mendelson Kips Bay Showhouse 2In the 11 years that the Mendelson Group has existed, Gideon and his staff have produced sensational interiors for clients in New York and the Hamptons that have graced the pages of several shelter publications – and last year the firm participated in the Designer Showhouse of Westchester, for which it won critical acclaim in the press.

Then this year, as if balancing life with his husband, his 3 children, and a thriving design studio weren’t enough, he created a ladies salon for The Kips Bay Showhouse – which closed last week after an incredibly well attended run.  What you may not know is that he literally created the room from raw space – even going as far as to conjure a decorative paneled ceiling to help unify the room’s awkward ‘L’ shaped configuration where no ceiling previously existed.  It was the kind of room you’d want to read in by the fireplace, pen thank you notes to friends, or chat with gal-pals over a civilized game of bridge.

So in a follow-up to Monday’s post in which John Eason shared his closing thoughts on the experience of participating in this years Kips Bay, I caught up with Gideon for a Q&A about his experience, and for some advise for designers who aspire to create a room for what is widely regarded as the country’s premiere design event….

Damon Adjusted A As is often the case with show houses, designers who are making their debut in the venue are often ‘gifted’ with a small or challenging space – calling in to play the essence of their creativity to make a lasting impression.
In years past some designers have knocked it out of the park – I immediately think about my departed friend Randy Ridless’s jewel-box room for Kips Bay in 2000 that garnered him not only the lead coverage in the Times, but eventually lead to his redesign of the Burberry Store on West 57th in conjunction with Barteluce Architects and Associates.
This year 2 charming and talented friends were given such rooms to decorate in the Villard Houses – John Eason the ‘Grand Staircase’ and Gideon Mendelson a rather oddly proportioned ‘L’ shaped room.  In my opinion they both pulled off a design coup – leaving the visitors to their respective spaces with a long-lasting impression of luxury in keeping with the Roman renaissance architectural tour-de-force Stanford White created.
And now that the event is over, I thought I’d catch up John and Gideon to learn about the experience, and to get some advise for designers who aspire to participate in Kips Bay – ‘The Academy Awards’ of interior design.

Lemons, Reinvention & Rizzoli

and my morning gratitude list

Sounds easy right?  I can say from experience that it’s not.

Like many people in the design industry, the 2008 economic meltdown helped teach me exactly what that phrase means; and for a while things were very difficult.  I know many of you can relate.

I set about reinventing myself by establishing this blog – to learn the in’s-and-out’s of building a platform, crafting an effective content strategy, and navigating the omnipresently shifting sands of social media.

It’s been hard work.  It’s taken discipline and sacrifice.

But it paid off earlier this year when Rizzoli purchased a proposal I’d written for a very ambitious book about American interior design, born from one my ongoing post here titled Master Class‘ (more on that later!)

This morning I want to share my gratitude for the friends who have supported my blogging efforts in the last 2 1/2 years – Abby Kaufman, Carl Lana, Anthony Costa, John Lyle, Melissa Mittag, Patrick Hamilton, John Eason, Andy Goldsborough, Ashley Bell, Rio Hamilton, Keita Turner, Andrew Joseph, George Hahn, Wendy Silverstein, Barry Goralnick, Wendy Snyder, Christina Juarez, and Dustin O’Neal among many others.

And I’d also like to thank Alexa Hampton, William Clark and Glenn Gissler for believing in me, and being my guardian angels.  I am truly blessed to know you.

The New York Times Seminar Series

at the AD Home Show

This Thursday the Architectural Digest Home Show opens in New York, and runs through Sunday.

In years past, I must admit, I’ve found the event a big lackluster; but the organizers have clearly picked up their game this year.

How?  The New York Times Seminar Series has been expanded to include 11 panel discussion with some incredibly talented design luminaries – including friends to this blog Robert Passal, Glenn Gissler,  Laura Bohn, Ellie Cullman, Kati Curtis, Patrick Hamilton, Lindsey Coral Harper, Neal Beckstedt, and Gideon Mendelson.

One seminar I’m particularly interested in attending (a strategically intelligent move on the part of the organizer to recognize young talent in our industry) will be moderated by the fast up-and-coming publicist Dustin O’Neal of Strohl & Co on Saturday at 5pm.

It’s Saint Patrick’s Day, and the day this blog celebrates its 2nd Anniversary!
