Every month for ‘At The Newsstand’ I scour as many interior design and lifestyle magazines as possible looking for inspiring interiors with one standout piece, or even an overlooked item that may be out of fashion, but which still commands my attention.  They say a chair is a chair, but some are iconic, and derive their elegance from the technology which spawned them, or are so steeped in historical reference that they are both classic and timeless.

There are two such examples in this post, along with sliding barn doors, crystal chandeliers and whimsical shell-encrusted mirrors.  Nothing is spared my scrutiny to find new resources – many less obvious – for your perusal.

Master Class: Dakota Jackson

Revitalization, New Designs, and a Course for the Future

CJ Dellatore Dakota Jackson

 …………………………

Back in May of this year I attended many of the events at New York’s D&D Building Spring Market, you may remember the post I wrote summing it up.

Perhaps the most interesting panel discussion of the day was moderated by Julie Iovine of The Wall Street Journal, and included Kati Curtis, Ally Coulter, and Dakota Jackson.  The conversation focused on the state of the luxury design industry post the 2008 financial collapse.  Mr. Jackson in particular made some controversial thought-provoking comments that intrigued me, so in the interest of getting more insight, I contacted him to see if we might meet.

He’s a busy man so it took some time to organize, but we finally sat down last week in his Flagship Showroom for a spirited conversation.  I’d like to share some of what I learned from this American design legend.

 …………………………

Two weeks ago I caught a blurb in The New York Times about The Sleep Studio, which just opened on Wooster Street in Soho.  The store’s concept intrigued me so I called to see if I might visit to learn more about it.

The firm’s owner Michael Rothbard, and their Creative Director Susan Burks graciously took time out of their busy schedules yesterday to give me a guided tour of the beautifully designed, ‘Zen-meets-Italia’ store.  And while I was first struck by the attention to detail in the 3700 square foot space – I soon learned there’s much more than meets the eye in this carefully crafted luxury shopping emporium.

At The Newsstand: July 2013

5 interiors, 5 products, 15 resources

At The Newstand

…………………………

Welcome to my monthly ‘At The Newsstand’ post for July, 2013.  It features five stunning interiors – each of which has one furnishing that I find especially intriguing, and the extraordinary resources for them.  The research is what this is all about for me – providing you with viable options that assist you in designing creative spaces.

July is heavy on handmade custom furniture resources, with a touch of sleek  and whimsical thrown in for good measure.  Ultimately, there are few shortcuts in this industry when it comes to procuring quality.  I avail you of my curiosity to assist you in making the effort a little less time-consuming.

So, let’s get started.

On the first full weekend of this summer season the doors to the premiere Holiday House Hamptons Decorator Show House opened with a white themed gala.  The evening was glorious with over 500 in attendance to show their support for Iris Dankner and Holiday House, the charity she founded.  The Hamptons community was all abuzz over the superlative efforts of the talented 22 interior designers who have graciously participated.

Master Class: Scott Salvator

a candid assessment of today's interior design industry

CJ Dellatore Scott Salvator

…………………………

With an illustrious career spanning more than 30 years Scott Salvator has been celebrated on the pages of countess shelter magazines, and has created rooms for the Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse – the Academy Awards of interior design as he calls it – a record 4 times: in 1994, 1999, 2002, and 2007.

Our design editor Carl Lana has had a personal friendship with Scott for more years than either of them are willing to admit to, so when I conceived of the idea to interview him for a Master Class post Carl made the introduction.

We were invited to Scott’s insanely chic Upper East side apartment (honestly one of the most creative spaces I’ve ever seen!) for a candid chat.  What Scott had to say about contemporary interior design; about what someone new to the industry needs to know to succeed; and about what he learned from Mario Buatta, Gary Crain, and Robert Metzger makes for invaluable insight every design professional will find helpful.

Carl Lana conducted the interview, here’s a recap.

The New Guard: Gideon Mendelson

a metered mix of mid-century lines and contemporary color

“Interior design is an art form and a craft that, at its highest level, takes talent, skill, education and experience.”

-Gideon Mendelson of the Mendelson Group

…………………………

Over the last few years Gideon Mendelson’s name has come up in conversations with my contemporaries, but I’d never had the pleasure of meeting him.  Then back in May I heard he’d created a wonderful room at the Designer Showhouse of Westchester and I decided to investigate his work. His decade old firm the Mendelson Group (coincidentally the cut-off age for a designer’s inclusion in The New Guard) is doing very well, and I was curious to hear what he considered some of the secrets of his success.
.
We met for breakfast this week and talked about his childhood as the son of an interior designer, about his belief that design is a service industry, and what he considers the 4 key skills required to succeed.  Here’s an excerpt from our chat.
