It’s not news that runway trends impact interior design. What does seem to of interest is the speed at which those trends make it to the decorating showrooms. In the 19 short years since the birth of the internet, almost everything from headline news to tawdry gossip gets delivered at whiplash inducing speed. So it is that Fashion Week September 2012 will become interior design September 2013 (or perhaps sooner.) This week I’ve observed fashion designers favoring blue in an expansive range – here are my highlights.

Calla
It’s always odd (perhaps the better word is remarkable) to see a color combination appear in several different shows, considering how close-to-the-vest fashion designers keep their cards. The mix of soft slate blue with a range of corals might be elementary to the color wheel expert, but the triad of Christian Siriano, Suno, and Calla make it fresh and relevant by blurring the literal boundary with painterly prints.

Indigo – the color derived from the Indigofera plant, can be traced back centuries to Egypt and India, where it was processed into ink. It wasn’t till 1853, when Levi Stauss and Jacob Davis introduced denim that the color became nonchalantly synonymous with ‘blue’ jeans. The range of colors we currently refer to part of the indigo family owe their names to variations created as Stauss’s ground-breaking work pants aged through wear and washing. Monique Lhuillier and See by Chloe sent ‘hard denim’ down the catwalk, while Charlotte Ronson gave us ‘stone wash’ in a horizontal strie and Rebecca Taylor favored a soft ‘acid wash’.

Helmut Lang
Black and blue on the catwalk is as unusual a combination as it is in interiors, but this season it’s turned up in no less than 4 collections. Jason Wu gives us a subtle floral print, Nicole Miller envisions modern biker/grunge, Herve Leger by Max Ariza serves up reticulated color blocked bandages, and Helmut Lang matched brocade with leather.

Range of Blues & Toile

The Misha Nonoo collection has nearly every design as a rift on blue from navy to powder, while Ruffian has dashes of blue toile on ivory. The 2 trends together have me imagining a monochromatic room in a range of blues – with a dash of historic toile used in a madly unconventional way.
