A Stylish New Option in Sleep Sofas

DSC00258

…………………………

It’s always a challenge to find a handsome sleep sofa that will stand up to the rest of your custom upholstery.

Yesterday I found a great solution to this conundrum while CJ and I were making the rounds of a few of our favorite showrooms in the Flatiron district of Manhattan…..

Incorporating Art Into Interiors

it's not just for hanging on walls anymore

CJ Dellatore Tony Duquette

Interior by Tony Duquette

…………………………

In my opinion, the notion that art is a precious entity to be relegated to being hung on the wall is far too limiting.  Tony Duquette understood this axiom as early as the 1940’s.

What is it that makes something a work of art, and how do we (or better yet how should we) live with and experience art in our daily lives?  And can a table or a lamp be considered art?  I say yes.

In my ongoing search for incredible furnishings that are above the cut I look for pieces that transcend their purpose and becomes an object of beauty.  And though the sticker price can often be trés cher, the appreciation and desire to elevate the aura of any living space should be the goal of the designer.

Let’s look at a few examples of furniture that I feel meet the criteria to be considered as ‘art furniture’.

To understand the point of view of a furniture designer it is necessary to investigate how they arrive at their unique designs.  Each designer who takes on the challenge to develop and produce his or her own line of home furnishings begins with a specific set of goals.  For most it is out of a need to create signature pieces that are an aesthetic extension of their broader work.  Others offer their clients special made-to-order pieces which become unique and personal to each client’s residence.

Whatever the reason, it always fascinates me when a design firm takes on the commitment to create a complimentary product line that is synonymous with their style.

Master Class: Dakota Jackson

Revitalization, New Designs, and a Course for the Future

CJ Dellatore Dakota Jackson

 …………………………

Back in May of this year I attended many of the events at New York’s D&D Building Spring Market, you may remember the post I wrote summing it up.

Perhaps the most interesting panel discussion of the day was moderated by Julie Iovine of The Wall Street Journal, and included Kati Curtis, Ally Coulter, and Dakota Jackson.  The conversation focused on the state of the luxury design industry post the 2008 financial collapse.  Mr. Jackson in particular made some controversial thought-provoking comments that intrigued me, so in the interest of getting more insight, I contacted him to see if we might meet.

He’s a busy man so it took some time to organize, but we finally sat down last week in his Flagship Showroom for a spirited conversation.  I’d like to share some of what I learned from this American design legend.

King of Clubs

6 of America's best regional designers & their favorite club chairs

King-of-Clubs1…………………………

I think we’d all agree that design is purely subjective.  Everyone has an opinion, and every opinion is valid.  It’s also true that there are as many decorating styles as there are decorators.  With those ideas in mind I decided to chat with 6 of America’s best regional interior design professional to learn about their individual aesthetics, their favorite club chairs – and more specifically – how those chairs speak to the area of the country they call home.

John Lyle, and his eponymous design firm, have been a Long Island City based atelier for more than 25 years.  He’s got a legendary following of designers that turn to him when a stiff shot of glamour is the order of the day.  The ‘Starburst’ Fire Screen is perhaps the best looking piece of functional sculpture in his collection – perfect for a winter’s evening, and even better as the answer to the summer fireplace conundrum.
