Eastern Interpretation

Maruni Collection's "Hiroshima" Chair

Japan is a nation that has for many centuries cultivated traditions based on wood that occupy an important position in daily life.  I have long been fascinated with the Japanese interpretation of western furniture.  While walking in Soho recently, I came across CITE, an assemblage of modern design furnishings that includes pieces from Maruni Wood Industries.  Originally established by Takeo Yamanaka in 1928, Maruni has morphed over the decades to include the work of celebrated architects and designers; Jasper Morrison, Michele De Lucchi and Naoto Fukasawa among others.    CITE has an edited version of Maruni’s pieces for sale, but with some careful research I was able to find most of their collection through other showrooms.

Naoto Fukasawa designed the “Hiroshima” chair, which was released by Maruni in 2008.  From the gracious curves of the back, arms and seat to the clean lines of the simply pitched legs, this chair whispers “please take me home” to those of us annoyed by senseless ornamentation.  It’s available in beech or oak in a variety of stains/varnishes, and can be ordered with the seat minimally padded in a selection of materials (including 2 leathers).   Take a trip to CITE to sit in this chair, it’s clearly austere but incredibly comfortable.  Understand that the stores inventory is available for immediate delivery, while custom orders take 10-12 weeks.  And FYI, ask to speak to Fernando, he’s friendly, knowledgeable and will make your shopping experience a joy.
