Stainless Steel ‘Starburst’ Fire Screen

John Lyle, and his eponymous design firm, have been a Long Island City based atelier for more than 25 years.  He’s got a legendary following of designers that turn to him when a stiff shot of glamour is the order of the day.  The ‘Starburst’ Fire Screen is perhaps the best looking piece of functional sculpture in his collection – perfect for a winter’s evening, and even better as the answer to the summer fireplace conundrum.

White Bronze Oval ‘Starburst’ Fire Screen

Monday’s design hunt took me on the super-easy trip to meet John.  I was accompanied by my partner-in-design Connie Lee.  John told us he’ll make the ‘Starburst’ screen in a round or an oval design, and in a wide array of finishes.   He’s also able to make a pair of minimal andirons that won’t compete with screen.

Brass ‘Crackle’ Fire Screen

The fireplace is often the centerpiece of fall gatherings, there’s no reason to let your modern guard down, and metal man John Lyle is to fireplaces what Harry Winston is to red carpet starlets. His brand new Crackle fire screen evokes a scattering of leaves, but his Block fire screen is the epitome of modern design, as are his Robert Andirons, in warm bronze.

‘Alexandria’ Andirons

And the 3rd combination I’m totally smitten with would be the ‘Alexandria’ Andirons behind the ‘Block’ Fire Screen.  By now you’ve deduced I was in a rather modern mood yesterday looking at John’s designs, but there are great choices for the more traditional designer.

Among the other categories in John’s design wheelhouse are cocktail tables, consoles and desks. The firm’s recently had a website overhaul that makes for super clean, user-friendly shopping.  You owe it to yourself to spend a few minutes looking through his collections.

His craftsmen excel at many metal finishes, as well as shagreen, parchment, and wood.  What’s even more interesting is that everything is fully customizable, and designer input is not only welcomed – it’s encouraged.  The atelier’s a short car service ride across the 59th street bridge, and John’s staff will happily arrange the trip.
